BCAN Peel is an African-centered organization committed to building, healing and advocating for the Black community of Peel. Our network comprises interdisciplinary professionals and community members invested in the holistic well-being of the Black community, families, youth and professionals.

Most of the Black Community Action Network (BCAN-Peel) work is centred around collaboration and partnership. In fact, the organization was conceived in collaboration by four community members in a coffee shop in Peel who were guided by one single motivation...the humanity of Black youth. Melissa Toney and Jeff Msangi, two of the four inaugural community members, are present in the community photo above.

Over the years, these community members Wambui KaranjaCrystal Perryman-Mark, Erica Taylor, Suelyn KnightKike Ojo-Thompson, Nadine Ruby, Ann Norris, and George Martin have continued to support the work of BCAN.

This group came together to build an African-centered organization committed to building, healing and advocating for the Black community of Peel. Our network comprises interdisciplinary professionals and community members invested in the holistic well-being of the Black community, families, youth and professionals.

Today, at the top of mind for BCAN in a mission to promote equity-focused systems change and community empowerment through advocacy, community mobilization, community education, and research.

A Note

from our Board of Directors.

Peel Region, Ontario

June 9th, 2020

On this day as the world celebrates the life of George Floyd, and like many across North America and the globe, the Black Community Action Network (BCAN) of Peel is deeply disheartened by recent tragedies of anti-Black racism that have sparked mass demonstrations across Canada, the U.S. and abroad. More troubling, however, is these incidents – the violent deaths of George Floyd, Regis Korchinski-Paquet, and D’Andre Campbell – are the tip of a pernicious tapestry of anti-Black racism baked into all public institutions including policing, courts, corrections, education, health, and child welfare.

Thank you for the Gift that is you.

and remember… we’re always stronger together.
